The snow-white, black-tipped feathers and sky blue eye patches of the Bali mynah make this one beautiful bird. It’s the only native bird on Bali, one of the Indonesian islands. In addition to being a beauty, it is also extremely rare: Fewer than 50 Bali mynahs remain in the wild, where they live in just one place, Bali Barat National Park.
These sea ducks are native to eastern Asia. At the Central Park Zoo, they are part of the largest public collection of sea ducks and represent the only scaly-sided mergansers in any North American zoo.
Found on Arctic seacoasts, the king eider stands out in its icy environs with its colorful head and bill. The birds are highly social, migrating in great flocks sometimes exceeding 10,000 individuals. At the Central Park Zoo, they are part of the largest public collection of sea ducks.
The gentoo is the third largest of all penguins, just after the emperor and king. One of the family’s fastest swimmers, it can reach speeds up to 15 mph. Gentoos stand out in the Antarctic with their bright orange beaks and feet, and band of white feathers that stretch above both eyes.
